About Orchidean One

ReEnergy is the company developing Orchidean One, a waste-to-energy plant proposed in Cartago, Costa Rica. The plant will turn 1,000 tonnes a day of ordinary solid waste — which today ends up in landfills — into 20 MW of electricity for the national grid. The investment is 100% private, flue-gas treatment is designed to European Union limits, and emissions readings will be published online and on public screens. A second plant is planned in Alajuela.

Key messages

Five ideas.

Data and sources are on every page of the site: the crisis, air & health, the world.

  1. Costa Rica is running out of room for its trash: 8 in 10 tonnes are buried and Central Valley landfills are at their limit.
  2. Orchidean One turns into electricity the trash that can’t be recycled and is buried today, with no public money.
  3. It’s proven technology: more than 3,000 plants worldwide, many in the center of cities like Copenhagen, Vienna and Tokyo.
  4. Air comes first: European Union limits, independent audits and public readings online and on screens.
  5. It complements recycling, it doesn’t replace it — as Costa Rica’s Law 8839 sets out.
